Review: Morrissey @ The Palladium

10/13/07, Los Angeles: Capping off an 8-night stand (originally ten nights) at Hollywood's soon-to-be-renovated Palladium, Moz was in good form Saturday night, although the show was a little on the short side.

Playing to his increasingly rabid L.A.-area fanbase, the Manchester Madman opened with an epic take on the Smiths' standard "How Soon is Now?", complete with togo-style drumming and a gong! Get it on! Bang on gong! Other Smiths tunes, including "Shoplifters of the World Unite", cropped up throughout the 1.5 hour set. Besides the extra percussion, the ace band found themselves playing the accordian, trumpet, various keyboards and, to crappy effect, a shrieking saxaphone. But it was on the stripped down "Billy Budd" and the encore "First of the Gang to Die," where Morrissey's charm and vocal bravado were allowed to fully shine (although he messed up the first verse of "Billy Budd").

Seeing a show with die-hard fans (not necessarily Die Hard fans, maybe at a Bruce Willis concert) can be fun. It's cool to hear 5,000 voices singing along to every word and treating the opening bars to each song like the second coming, but then again, it's kind of irritating to hear 5,000 voices singing along to every word and treating the opening bars to each song like the second coming.

And there were multiple reports of fistfights during the performance. Does that mean there are multiple reports of hugging at Slayer shows?

Morrissey hates money!!!

As per Billboard, Morrissey's publicist has confirmed the artist refused a $75 MILLION payday to tour with guitarist Johnny Marr under the Smiths name. SEVENTY-FIVE MILLION DOLLARS. What the fuck? What kind of an idealistic, non-greedy world do we live in?
